Hapkido (The combination of joint energies)
is a Korean form of the martial arts, similar to that of the
Japanese karate (the way of the open hand) and the Chinese
Kung Fu.
These arts have their own disciplines, and
many different styles or schools (kwan). They all share the
same disciplines of hand and foot striking, rolling, breakfalling,
throwing and self defence techniques. Some schools also have
a series of patterns or katas (hand, foot, roll and throwing
motions combined in a continuous flowing sequence). All of
these motions and techniques are based on hard, soft or circular
actions.
One of the major differences between many
schools or styles of martial arts is the emphasis of some
in self defence techniques, dynamic rolling and high breakfalls
(eg. The Japanese Aikido) whilst others emphasise hand and
foot striking with speed, power and precision e.g. the Chinese
(Chin nar), Japanese Karate or the Korean Tae kwon do. It
is Hapkido that embraces all of these aspects.
