Students practise their Hapkido skills
with light contact sparring which involves kicking, hand striking,
judo, take-downs and techniques.
Fighting techniques (daerien sul) also
form part of Hapkido training; students learn a sparring type
sequence of moves for each grade.
Hapkido is not a competition style. Many
Hapkido moves would result in serious injury to the opponent
if they were used in competition. However, aspects of Hapkido
are similar to other styles and Hapkido students find that
their skills are very transferable to other competition systems.
A Hapkido student is capable of competing in Taekwondo, Karate
or Judo.
